East Las Vegas Downpour on June 14th, 2015

The funny thing about this downpour was that we received a severe thunderstorm warning yesterday saying winds expected in excess of 60 mph, could knock down trees, etc...but our part of town did not receive even a sprinkle of rain. Yet today, we received the winds, a rainstorm knocked down a portion of our tree in the backyard, and we might have received the downpour of the summer.

Thankfully, my Dad and bro had been working on his car and had just finished before the rain struck.  We had also harvested 4 ears of corn.

Then, the storm hit and the tree in the backyard was its first casualty.
Note: Those branches on the ground were attached to the tree before the storm and there is a small branch still holding onto the tree at this point.

The smaller branch that was on the tree fell too after the series of 4 downpours to join its fallen comrades.
The smaller branch that was hanging on is gone, another casualty of war.

The rainstorm was quite a show though.  I'm impressed that my camera caught the raindrops in action.
"To the left, to the left...." (these song lyrics came into my head when I posted this picture)

Angle of the shot makes the drops look like straight lines....cool :D

And the downpour continues...
The storm also knocked some of the fruit off our trees...additional casualties of war, but at least we could eat these casualties. Technically, we did run out to collect some of these and ate some of them while watching the storm.

The flowers also had raindrops on them after the storm, so the roses were particularly photogenic.

After the storm, I learned that my street has an offset crown closer to the opposite side of the street.  As a result, my side of the street stays flooded longer than the other side of the street and collects more water.
Flooded on one side of the street into the closest residential intersection.

The residential street behind my street also experiencing some puddles at the intersection after the storm subsided.

Overall, the storm passed with the main casualty being the tree in the backyard.

However, those branches were going to be trimmed in the near future anyway by my dad. As entertaining as having him attach a saw to a pole would have been to see, I think Mother Nature did us a favor.

Thankfully, the branches were not caught in additional wind gusts and landed in the yard instead of crashing into the powerlines on our back property line. That could have been really bad.  Also, at least the tree branches were knocked down by the wind and didn't get hit by lightning instead.  We were lucky in how this tree went down.

The morale of the story: Keep Your Trees Well-Trimmed Before Storm Season (especially when you have powerlines surrounding your property).  Ironically, yesterday's severe thunderstorm warning came true for us today and not yesterday. I felt really excited yesterday that we might see some rain and I was disappointed when there was no rain during the severe thunderstorm warning from 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm.  I'm glad that Mother Nature decided to deliver the rain package today during the day, so I could engage in amateur photography and see the rainstorm glory optimally (with light outside). #DesertRatsLoveRain

There's nothing like a desert rain. This rain was great to watch and it sparked my curiosity in the geometry of the roadways surrounding our house. #EngineeringVersusNature
